LYING

"The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid."

I.     Although it is not unforgivable (Leviticus 6:2-7), lying is a serious sin,
       worthy of death.

       A.   Under the Law, the punishment for bearing false witness was death.

                     Deuteronomy 19:16-21
                     Proverbs 19:9

       B.   God killed Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit.

                     Acts 15:1-11

       C.   The punishment for all liars shall be the lake of fire.

                     Revelation 21:8

       D.   They shall be denied entrance into the kingdom, for they cannot dwell with God.

                     Psalms 15:1-2
                     Revelation 21:15, 27

II.   God's attitude towards lying is one of anger and hatred.

              Hosea 4:1
              Psalms 5:6
              Proverbs 6:16-19; 12:22

        A.   This includes flattery (Psalms 5:9; 12:2; 62:4) and so-called
"little white lies" (1 John 2:21 "No lie is of the truth.")

       B.   Lying is forbidden by God.

                     Exodus 20: 16; 23:1
                     Leviticus 19:11; 6:2-7
                     Deuteronomy 5:20
                     Matthew 19:18

III.   Satan is the "father of lies."

              John 8:44

       A.   The first lie, recorded in the book of Genesis, was told by Satan himself.

                     Genesis 3:4-5

       B.   " ... no lie is of the truth."

                     1 John 2:21

       C.   A person can even have a demon of lying (or, "lying spirit").

                     1 Kings 22:22
                     2 Chronicles 18:20-22

IV.   Lying is a part of our old nature, and it must be put to death.

              Colossians 3:9-10

       A.   A lying tongue stems from a heart of hatred.

                     Proverbs 26:28

       B.   Paul exhorts us to "put away lying" and "speak the truth every
              man with his neighbor."

                     Ephesians 4:25
