CREATION:
A Study in the Scriptures
"For thus saith the Lord that created the
heavens;
God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established
it,
he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited...."
Isaiah 45:18
by Diane Dew
I. Everything was "created" – that, is, made
out of nothing. Before anything else was, there was God.
Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and
the earth."
A. Centuries before Galileo (1564-1642 A.D.) theorized the
earth was round, Scripture declared it so.
Isaiah 40:22 The Almighty "sits upon the circle of the
earth..."
Job 26:7 "He hangeth the earth upon nothing."
B. The theory of evolution is not compatible with
Scripture. Scripture states that each varying classification,
at creation, was made "after its own kind," or
"according to its own kind." In not a single
instance has one class of creature evolved into another.
Genesis 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25
1 Corinthians 15:38, 39
1. Evolution claims life forms are in a continual
state of transition. Scripture teaches creation as a
completed event.
Genesis 2:3
2. Evolution claims man originally was a
meat-eater. Scripture says man originally was a vegetarian.
Genesis 1:29
3. Evolution teaches death existed long before man
was even created. Scripture teaches death resulted from man’s
sin.
Romans 5:12
II. All of creation was designed with a purpose ("not
in vain"). Nothing exists by chance.
Isaiah 45:18 "For thus saith the Lord that created the
heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he
hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it
to be inhabited...."
A. The purpose of creation (and thus, our purpose in
being) was "for his pleasure."
Revelation 4:11 "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive
glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all
things, and for thy pleasure they are and were
created."
B. We were created for the glory of God.
Isaiah 43:7 "Even every one that is called by my
name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed
him; yea, I have made him."
C. Creation is evidence of the reality of God.
Romans 1:20 "For the invisible things of him from
the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood
by the things that are made, even his eternal power and
Godhead; so that they are without excuse."
D. By God's Word (a deliberate act of God's will, not
by happenstance or by accident), everything we see was spoken
into existence.
Psalm 148:5 "Let them praise the name of the Lord:
for he commanded, and they were created."
Genesis 1:20-21, 24 "And God said, Let the waters
bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,
and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament
of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living
creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth
abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after
his kind: and God saw that it was good.... And God said...
and it was so."
III. The Father was not alone in the creative process.
Genesis 1:26 "Let us make man in our image...."
A. Jesus was present at creation.
Ephesians. 3:9 "And to make all men see what is the
fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the
world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus
Christ."
Colossians 1:15-16 "Who is the image of the
invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him
were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in
earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or
dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were
created by him, and for him."
B. Adam was assigned the responsibility of naming the animals.
Genesis 2:19 "And out of the ground the Lord God
formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air;
and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them:
and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was
the name thereof."
IV. God's creation is very orderly and the specifics of
the creation process provide a significant point of reference to
his plan.
A. Woman was made for man. As such, her role is one
of submission in God's order.
1 Corinthians 11:9 "Neither was the man created for
the woman; but the woman for the man."
B. God created a distinction between the sexes.
Genesis 1:27 "So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God created he him; male and female created
he them."
Genesis 5:1-2 "This is the book of the generations
of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of
God made he him; Male and female created he them; and
blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when
they were created."
Mark 10:6 "But from the beginning of the creation
God made them male and female."
C. Everything reproduces "after its own kind" –
i.e., ducks do not mate with dogs, etc.
Genesis 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25
1 Corinthians 15:38, 39
V. The status of creation today.
A. Originally, everything God made was "very good."
Genesis 1:31
B. Sin destroyed the perfect plan of God.
1. God grew disappointed and angry with his creation and
said he regretted having made it.
Genesis 6:7 "And the Lord said, I will destroy man
whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man,
and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the
air; for it repenteth me that I have made them."
2. Since sin entered the world, creation has been "in
bondage."
Romans 8:19-22 "For the earnest expectation of the
creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not
willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the
same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be
delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious
liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole
creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until
now."
C. God knows all about his creation and watches over it.
Isaiah 40:26 "Lift up your eyes on high, and behold
who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host
by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of
his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth."
Luke 12:6 "Are not five sparrows sold for two
farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before
God?"
D. Creation will be remade.
Isaiah 65:17-18 "For, behold, I create new heavens
and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor
come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that
which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing,
and her people a joy."
VI. Some worship creation, rather than the Creator; this is
wrong.
Romans 1:25 "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and
worshipped
and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for
ever. Amen."
