I.   God does not want His people to live in fear.
............ Isaiah 8:11-13   "For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people ... neither fear ye their fear, not be afraid. Sanctify th Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread."

Jeremiah 42:11, etc.   "Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the Lord; for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand."

Luke 12:4, 5 "And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forearn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him."

II.  Where does fear come from?
............. A.  It is not from God.
......... 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect [complete, mature] in love."

B.  Fear is the result of a lack of faith.
......... Matthew 14:30, 31   "But when [Peter] saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?"

Luke 21:25, 26 "And there shall be ... upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken."

C. It may be due to guilt or sin.
.......... Genesis 3:10 "And [Adam] said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."

1 Samuel 18:12, 29, etc. "And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul."

Matthew 25:25 "And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth ..."

Isaiah 66:4 "I also will ... bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear; but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not."

III.  What results from a life of fear?

       A.  Sickness.

                  Proverbs 17:22 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken
                  spirit drieth the bones."

       B.  Torment.

                 1 John 4:18 "... fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect
                 [complete, mature] in love."

       C.  Bondage.

                  Job 3:25   "For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that
                 which I was afraid of is come unto me."

                  Proverbs 29:25   "The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his
                  trust in the Lord shall be safe."

                  Romans 8:15   "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear ..."

                  Hebrews 2:15   "[Jesus] deliver[ed] them who through fear of death were
                  all their lifetime subject to bondage."

                  1 John 4:18 "... fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect
                  [complete, mature] in love."

      D. Failure.

                  Judges 7:3 "...Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early
                  from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand ..."

      E. Discontentment and uncertainty.

                  Deuteronomy 28:66, 67 "And thy life shall hand in doubt before thee; and thou
                  shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life."

IV. How can fear be overcome?

      A.  Through the knowledge of the Truth.

                  John 8:32

      B.  By praise and thanksgiving.

                  Psalms 106:47

      C.  By the determination to take victory over it (Psalms 112:7, 8) and refusing to surrender
            to it (Romans 6:16; Exodus 14:13, 14; James 4:7).

      D.  By seeking God.

                  2 Chronicles 20:12   "O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might
                  against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do:
                  but our eyes are upon thee."

                  Nehemiah 4:14 "And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the
                  rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord,
                  which is great and terrible, and fight ..."

V.  Jesus Christ came to free us of all our fears.

                  Luke 1:74; Hebrews 2:14-15

VI.  But "the fearful and unbelieving ... shall have their part in the lake" of fire
       (Revelation 21:8).
